So you have decided who your target audience is, the next step is to generate keywords.
I always find Brainstorming to be a great way of doing this. You never know what words will show up and it really helps you to think about your business and the services or products you provide in a really loose unstructured way. There will be plenty of time for structure later on, brainstorming is a way of opening your mind and thinking laterally about all aspects of your business and you never know it could help in other areas of the business too.
How to begin, well it’s really simple.
- Turn off your computer and remove all distractions, radio, phone etc.
- Get a large piece of paper, at least A4, preferably larger and a pen.
- In the middle of the page write down your comapny name, now all around this word write down everything you can think of. Try and remove yourself from your postion as owner and be as free as possible with your word choices. There are no wrong words! Don’t think about it too much, be as random and lateral as you can, you might be surprised with what you can come up with. Include all kinds of and types of words, related colours, emotions, shapes, anything you can think of.
- When the creative juices have stopped flowing, sit back and have a look at all of the words you have come up with. Which would be suitable for use as Keywords? How many can be used throughout your website. If some words are unsuitable for use as content on the main pages, perhaps they could be used at a later date for News or Blog pages. If you have come up with these words in relation to your own company and website it’s a good chance that others will too.
